Barely 2% of the food consumed in Powys is produced within the county….
Over two years we worked with volunteers and trainees to develop a community garden and organic food growing plot on a derelict industrial site behind the Cwm Harry unit on the Vastre Industrial Estate. Using soil improver made from Cwm Harry’s food waste collections and with support from Environment Wales, we installed a raised bed system, two polytunnels, rainwater harvesting, paths and a roundhouse for garden volunteers to shelter in. We also provided education and experience for producers and new growers by running short and longer courses.
Now for 2012 the Cwm Harry Community Garden project has launched a new three year Get Growing project to support the development of food growing initiatives in community gardens, allotments and microplots in and around the Newtown area. Places such as school grounds, old age homes, council land, waste ground – anywhere we can find space.
